International Summer School on Geological Hazards in Volcanic Islands

Conteúdo Programático

The “International Summer School on Geological Hazards in Volcanic Islands” is a holistic course that provides an overview of different geological hazards affecting volcanic islands. The Summer School is promoted by the IVAR Academy of the Research Institute for Volcanology and Risk Assessment (IVAR) of the University of the Azores and will bring together a group of internationally recognized experts to present state-of-the-art knowledge on different geological hazards, such as volcanism, volcanic fluids, earthquakes, landslides, and tsunamis. The Summer School will include a range of approaches to the study of geological hazards, from theoretical frameworks to hazard assessment, monitoring techniques, and hands-on practical exercises.

The 4th edition of the International Summer School on Geological Hazards in Volcanic Islands will be held at the campus of Ponta Delgada of the University of the Azores from 16 to 23 June 2024. In addition to lectures and practical exercises, the Summer School includes an icebreaker and a closing dinner, as well as field trips to the Furnas, Fogo, and Sete Cidades volcanic areas, benefiting from the extraordinary geological diversity of São Miguel Island and the knowledge of invited lecturers and local experts.

For eight days, participants will have the unique opportunity to gain crucial knowledge on understanding and mitigating geological hazards in volcanic island environments, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and professional growth. There will also be ample opportunities to engage in proliferous discussions of ongoing student projects and future collaborations, taking advantage of the close contact between international senior scientists and early-career researchers.

Applications must be done by filling out a form (see link below) and submitted along with a short motivation letter and Curriculum Vitae. Applications must be submitted by 30 April 2024. The International Summer School on Geological Hazards in Volcanic Islands is aimed at PhD and MSc students in Earth Sciences, and applicants will be selected based on their CVs and motivation letters. The Summer School will accept a maximum of 20 students. There is no registration fee and the selected students will be entitled to accommodation in shared rooms in local hostels and lunch during the entire week.
