Resumo

A new survey to measure the concentration of CO2 in the soil was undertaken on Faial Island (Azores) in order to define the relationship between diffuse soil degassing and the known volcano-tectonic structures. This survey confirmed the results obtained in a previous work and showed that the main anomalous area related with the edifice of the active central volcano is well expressed inside the caldera. Degassing is strongly controlled by WNW-ESE, NNW-SSE to NW-SE and NE-SW faults and the circular shape of some contours around the volcano caldera suggests the existence of circular faults. The main CO2 anomaly is interpreted as the result of degassing from a magma chamber.
