The response of the environment to the ash falls from Mt. Etna was evaluated at a 1:100.000 scale, aiming at defining the vulnerability in the areas surrounding the Sicilian volcano. On the basis of this study, two maps were produced, making reference to two different hypothetical scenarios and assuming a simplified eruptive model in accordance to the type of activity and the eruptive style exhibited by the volcano in the last decade.


One of the scenarios simulated the effects of the instantaneous deposition of 0.5 cm of ash over a circular area within a radius of 35 km from the summit crater, and the other reproduced the consequences of the continuous fall of 0.5 cm of ash per day, during a period of 90 days, over a circular area within a radius of 50 km from the summit.


The database, implemented by a multidisciplinary approach, was constituted by forty informative classes related to land use, both in natural and urban environments, and it was arranged into five vulnerability ranks.
